Artist Research 5

For my last final artist research, i researched Jonny Briggs. He is a well known artist, studied at the Chelsea collage of art (2008) And The Royal collage of art (2011)  He has been a big impact in my work of this project, i have been looking at his work since the beginning. “Jonny Briggs produces highly personal work that explores the nature of family relationships and the mythology of ancestry using props and constructed sets to photograph his disguised self and family members in search of lost parts of his childhood. Jonny tries to think outside the reality he was socialized into and creates new realities with his parents and his self. I am looking at the work of Jonny Briggs because he does some work with collages with portraits. He has old photos and then adds different images over the top of them to make them different. He covers up the eyes a lot in his images which can be to hide personalities. I also like that the base image is black and white and the image he has added is in colour, i have tried this with some of my work to. I like the way he has used to mouths to put over the eyes but they are still in shapes of the eyes which makes it very creative. Below are some samples of his work which i have been looking at.

Within my work i am looking closely at portraits and adding pictures of personal items into them, I have tried loads of different ones and some colour, some black and white just to see what works best for my project. Below is one of my black and white images, i have started out with just the portrait and then i added in some flowers as my model really likes them.

National Portrait Gallery

Yesterday i went to the National Portrait Gallery to find some more inspiration for my image lab project. I am working on portraits and collages together so i thought it would be good to go have a look at the National Portrait Gallery to see what i could find and see if i could research any for my project. I really liked the work of Ketaki Sheth who one of the most known contemporary photographers in India. She is very much interested in questions of identity and representation. Her work which i saw at National Portrait Gallery was very much about identity. When i got home i went onto the National Portrait website to look at her work more closely and see what it was about. The work which i saw was about Sidi a people of African descent living in India with origins in historic trade routes. She also states that the Sidi people have called India home since the seventeenth century, adopting many of the conventions of dress, food and ceremony characteristic of the subcontinent, at the same time they still maintain a distinct identity and culture. I really find this work interesting and i like how personal it is to her, below are some images for the National Portrait website of her work Sidi.

Most recent work

This is my most recent work which i have done for my image lab project. I have been looking at loads of different artists who work with doing art collages and also some who use flowers to do so. Within my work i am taking portraits of my models and then adding pictures of their personal items to the main image of the portrait. I am trying it out in colour and black & white just to see which way i like best. I have done some images where i only add a few items and some where i add a lot of items again this is so i can see which way i like best. As you can see i have done a few different ones and the ones named ‘Final image’ are the ones which i like the most and i am considering as my final image. Below are samples of my work.

Artist Research 4

My fourth final artist for my project is Raoul Hausmann who was born in 1886 in Vienna, Austria. Is a German DADA artist, poet, photographer and polemicist. Moved to Berlin in 1990 and Enrolled at Arthur Lew-Funck’s Atelier for painting and sculpture in Berlin-Charlottenburg. The work of his that i am looking and are most interested in is his art collages, he uses images and words/letters and puts them all together to make collages. He has also done work with Hannah Hoch on his collages. I like his work because it really stands out as an art collage because there is so much to look at, and like i said before about collages you can’t just look once you have to keep looking to take the whole image in. This is what i want to happen with my work, i don’t just want people to look once and walk away i want them to look and keep looking so that they take it all in and understand what I’ve done and why i did it. I feel like his work relates to mine because it is personal to him in ways just like my images are, they are personal to the people in my images with their personal things around them. Below are some samples of his collage work which i really like.

I have done some more collage work now which is shown below i feel that it is starting to get better the more i do it, it may never be as good as Raoul Hausmann but i can only try. Raoul Hausmann but his images together by hand where as mine in done on the computer using Photoshop, at the beginning of this project i did do some collages by hand just to test it all out and see if i wanted to carry on with this sort of idea.

Artist Research 3

My third final artist which has had impact on my final work is Hannah Hoch who was born 1889 in Gotha, Germany. Know best for her political collage and photomontage works. Her most know work is when she rearranged images and text from the mass media to critique the failings of the Weimar German Government. I like her work because she uses her emotion to things to show it in her work by using images. The first image below is about the Weimar German Government and her views on how she thinks they failed. I feel that her work has impact on mine because she works really closely with making collages and putting loads of different images together to make one which is what i am trying to do with mine. I had starting out with a portrait and then adding different types of objects to the image to make a personal collage to the person in the portrait. My work is also personal to the people i am taking photos of which is like hers is personal to her. I have looked at many of her different and i really like how effective they are, you can’t just look at the image once you have to keep looking back to take it all in and to really see it all clearly.

Below is an image of one my pieces i have done, this shows one of my models with images around her, the images around her are of things that she finds personal to her, as you can see there are loads of different things. I wanted to include enough to fill the image so that it looked better as a collage. I added them to the original portrait by using Photoshop. I also tried the same image in black and white so see which effect works for my idea.

Tate Gallery

Last week i went to the Tate Gallery in Liverpool i went not knowing what was on at the time as i like to be surprised. When walking round there were many amazing pieces of artworks everywhere. One of the ones i liked and had to research when i got home was the work of Cathy Wilkes, she is an Installations artist best know for her imaginary environments which recall poetic visions. She has been nominated for the turner prize. The work which was at the gallery was an installation view called ‘The encyclopedic Palace’ Made up of many large sculptural installations and also paintings. below is a picture i got off the Tate website.

Another piece of work i really liked was by photographer Gyorgy Kepes, this was his first solo exhibition in the UK, He worked across disciplines experimenting with photography, art and science coming up with the work for his show. He had 80 photographs, photomontages and photograms on show at the Tate. Below is a picture i got off the Tate website.

Artist research 2

My second final artist is Julia Borissova, born in Tallinn, Estonia now living in St, Petersburg, Russia. Working as a photographer making different types of work. Her work which I am looking at is called Running to the edge, this is a number of photos which look like old black and white photos with bright flowers on them. She combines old photos and flower petals, Destroying the original image of people in the photos by putting flower petals over them to make them anonymous. “I reflect on how with the laps of time some details are erased from our memories and every time we recall something from the past we construct another image replacing some parts by new ones, i’m trying to do the same in my pictures’ This is a quote from Julia Borissova’s website: http://juliaborissova.ru/Julia_Borissova_PhotoSite/Bio.html I have been looking at her work because i feel that her work links to mine by the flowers she uses as i just did one like her, i am still at the early stage of my work so i’m still experimenting with new ideas. Below is some images of her work.I really like that she has remade all these photos her own just by adding a few petals is really makes it something new, they stand out so much better this way, most exciting to look at.

I have done mine by taking a picture of my model and then added loads of flowers to it on Photoshop, i know its not the same but still links because i have used flowers to create something new and make the original more exciting than what it was before. Below is a sample of my work.

Most up to date work

This blog post is about what i have been doing in my project recently, i have been out taking photos of two models outside while it has been really nice weather. I then went on to find out what they liked and then took pictures of the objects of things they liked so that i could add them to their portraits. I then started by putting the portraits onto Photoshop and one by one i started to add the objects in using the magnetic lasso tool to cut out the objects. I then used the blur tool to start blending them into the face to it didn’t look to harsh having them just sit there. To the one of the boy i added a bottle to his portrait because he enjoys going out with his friends. I also added a picture of my girl model because they are good friends. To the portrait of the girl model i added lots of different flowers all different colours because she has a thing for flowers.

Research Artist 1

For this project i am going to use five different artists which i feel relate to my most most out of all the artists i have looked at over this project. I think that many artists which i have looked at over this project have an impact on my work and my final ideas. My first final one is Linder Sterling as she has had a massive impact in my work. Linder Sterling was born 1954 in Liverpool, England. Now working in Heysham, mostly know for her collages which she works closely on the idea of critical socio-cultural issues and feminism. She makes her confrontational collages from woman’s fashion and domestic magazines and pornographic cutouts. Linder Sterling’s most well known piece of work is the iconic cover for the 1977 single ‘Orgasm Addict’ by the Buzzcocks. I really like the way she presents her work, using photos and then adding bits of magazines to them to make them different and stand out to everyone else’s work, which is why she is well known, as soon as i see her work i know its her’s. I think that her work links to my because i have taking a portrait of a face then adding personal objects to their face and around it. Even though i’m not using magazine cutouts i am taking all the photos myself of the objects so that it is all my work. Below is some samples of her work, i have also included the single cover for you to see.

I have looked at many collage artists and her’s really stood out to me as it’s so different which is one of the main reasons i like it. I am recently been working more on my project. I have been taking photos of my models and then objects of things that they like so i could add them into my work. I added the images to my models faces by using Photoshop.
